Why are people who are interested in girls on the autism spectrum also interested in PDA?
As our notion of autism broadens we are reviewing not only the full range of the spectrum but also the prevalence figures especially in women and girls. There remain open questions about the incidence of PDA although initial findings suggest 1:25 of individuals on the autism spectrum have a PDA profile (Gillberg et al. 2015). Due to the profile of PDA including seemingly better social skills, variability across settings such as a difference between behaviour at school and at home, and raised anxiety which leads to avoidance with a drive to control, there are often parallels drawn with other autistic girls.
Evidence is suggesting a more even gender ratio in PDA compared to in other ASD profiles (Newson et al. 2003; OâNions et al. 2014a; OâNions et al. 2014b; Gillberg et al. 2015). Gould and Ashton-Smith have also suggested that PDA could be more typical of a female ASD presentation (Gould and Ashton-Smith 2011).
Along with growing awareness of the issues for women and girls with autism there is also interest in promoting emotional well-being. Girls with a PDA profile are likely to experience particularly high levels of anxiety which will in turn have an increased impact on their mental health.
